This is one of Fresno's coolest and most unique events. Definitely worth a try if you've never been.
Bandgeek: HELP! This Post Is Trapped Under The Weight Of So Much Good Music
These are the kinds of weekends us live music geeks live for. Three days full of action, lot's to choose from. So scroll through, click some links, have a listen to some stuff you've never taken the time to before. Basically what we're saying … let's BANDGEEK!
FRIDAY
C.A.F.E. INFOSHOP: That's right, a show that we have our name-in-the-hat on is taking the not-all-that-coveted lead spot on Bandgeek; wanna fight about it!? We went into full description earlier but basically you take SF band (with Valley ties) Slow Trucks. Add Madera's stellar Buffalo Guns. Then mix in SLO's smAlls. And stir with Fresno's Sunburns. You've got a nice DIY kinda indie rock show in Chinatown at C.A.F.E. Infoshop. [7pm, $5, ALL AGES]
BABYLON: A little something different for ya brought in by Diehardz as Baghdad metal band Acrassicauda makes a Fresno stop. These are the same guys from the movie Heavy Metal In Baghdad. Pretty fucking sweet. Details:
CYC: A visit from Sacramento hardcore band, Havenside. And hey, just a few doors down from the Buffalo Guns show at C.A.F.E. Infoshop. Hard. Core. Synergy.
KUPPAJOES: This lineup might win the weekend prize for coolest names: Obadiah Parker (Phoenix folk musician), Omotola, The Red Coats, Cold Eskimo and Anthony Polanco. Details:
AUDIE'S OLYMPIC: It's like mostly The Melvins [Lite] … two OG ones anyway. Kinda like how KISS is now. The dude with the big hair is still in the band it looks like so that's cool! Hey, it's some of The Melvins at Audie's; what more do you want?:
STARLINE: "A Midsummers Night Rock Show" with Style Like Revelators, Flonkerton and The Capital Is Burning. [8:30pm, $6, 21+]
CLUB RETRO: San Fransisco Alt/indie band A Lot Like Birds and Sacramento's I The Mighty plus some local talent:
SATURDAY
FULTON 55: Make sure to listen to the primer for this show. Sahab really has something special going on, we thinks, probably should catch this:
Focused On Fresno: Drunk Ass Orangutans Edition
Arguably the most entertaining animals at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo are the orangutans. Mostly because it seems like they know how to party. But, we're not sure because we only go to the zoo during the day so we've never seen any of these suspected 'rangtang parties' (surely they must wait until nightfall to get crunked).
Well, starting this weekend and continuing every weekend thru December, we can finally find out because the zoo will be open at night… until 8:00 anyway.
Sooo want to see an orangutan kegstand.
Fres-mooch: Win Free Tickets To ‘Rockstir’
UPDATE: We have a winner (see, it pays to be reading blogs late at night).
So you may have seen this ticket giveaway floating around the blogs today. We got jealous and demanded to be let in on the giving; even if it involves the Northeast Fresno area (which we aren't the biggest fans of). But it involves drinking and music, so we're willing to give this event a shot:
What the hell is this Rockstir all about, anyway?
There will be live bands (Midori & Audiocliqueand Dazed & Confused). Plus a Fashion Show, Full Bar, Fresno’s Finest Restaurants Sampling their best in food, Local Vendor Booths, VIP Pre-party, Live DJ… it goes on (21+ only).
Your ticket includes entrance to the event plus 2 (full-size) drink tickets and access to all the food tasting and booths. Additional drink tickets will be for sale on-site. A portion of proceeds to benefit The Shakers non-profit organization.
But hey, you like to mooch (win tickets) so here is how:
- Be 21 or older.
- Have the ability to enter your email where asked while leaving a comment to this post.
- A fondness for drinking outdoors and saying snarky things while people watching.
- Willing and able to go pick up the tickets at Astone in Downtown Fresno on Friday (by 4).
So, first one to comment on this post and is okay with everything above, gets two tickets. Everyone that comments after that can call us sellouts and douches.
An Olympic Monday Hangover
On Saturday, The Fresnan nerded it up with fellow Fresno bloggers at the 2008 Blogger Olympics. I think the pictures and
video, soon to follow below, will confirm the nerdness for ya.
What the hell are the Fresno Blogger Olympics, you ask? A gathering of Fresno bloggers competing in nerd inspired Olympic events. Yeah baby, I don't see Portland Bloggers getting together and doing cool nerdshit like Fresno – I think it was coined as "Bloggeradarie" by H-Mac or Adam.
After the break, more pictures and video, as the day of "sport" begins at Blackbeards:
Fresno is on high Rogue alert
The Rogue pot is starting to boil. The West Coast’s biggest Fringe [style] Festival starts Thursday, Fresno. We know South of Shaw Dude will be out in force over the next couple weeks, but will North Fresno Guy?
For those Northies afraid to go, you can just hang out here. Because The Fresnan will be going to as many Rogue events as possible and blogging about it along the way. Saturday is the big Rogue day for us. The loose plan is for the day to begin at one and end at eleven. Hopefully with several beers.
Let it boil:
*Make sure to listen to the latest Flowing with Famous podcast where Joshua Tehee and myself interview Joy and Marcel from the Rogue.
